Baggot Court Townhouse Hotel Dublin

Baggot Court Townhouse Hotel Dublin

Baggot Court Townhouse Hotel is steeped in history. The building was first occupied as family home by Patrick Curtis on 15th July 1815. Patrick was a stockbroker and prominent campaigner for greater religious freedom. He worked with Daniel O’Connell “the liberator “ who successfully introduced Roman Catholic Relief Act in 1829 which included the right to vote and engage in the professions. In 1829 Timothy O Brien purchased Baggot Court Townhouse from Patrick Curtis. Timothy O Brien was a wine merchant and in 1844 he became Lord Major of Dublin only the third major to have been democratically elected at that time. You will note newspaper reports on the walls of the dining room reporting on the pomp and ceremony in Dublin when the lord major was appointed. Queen Victoria visited Dublin in 1849 and was welcomed to the city by O Brien who was serving a second term as Lord Major. Dublin was not a walled city and it was decided to create a replica of a city gate. It was constructed on Baggot Street Bridge a short walk to the right when you exit the front door. A picture of the replica gate is hanging on the wall in the hall. She gave him the title Bart.

During the war of independent on 21st November 1920 a decision was made by Michael Collins leader of the Irish resistance to eliminate the British secret service who were operating in the city. That night 13 senior secret service personnel were executed. An attack was carried out on a occupant at Baggot Court which was at that time a house laid out in apartments. During a very successful visit to Ireland in 2011 Queen Elizabeth visited Croke Park. In 1996 the property was in a derelict state.

The property had no roof and the only occupants were the pigeons. The property was purchased by the present owners. The property was rebuilt and converted into a guesthouse. The original house was a frugal type of Georgian house. The builders saved as much of the original house during construction as they could but most of it was in very poor condition. Features remaining from 1815 include the banisters on the stairs the window frames in most of the house and some of the ceilings. Also the front door. The fan light over the door is very special and of the period. It is worth having a look at it when leaving the premises.

“What a gem! Amazing value. Great location.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed yesterday

Stayed here for a weekend break. Chose the hotel purely for the value. At £113 for 2 nights at a weekend, it was an easy decision. AirCoach from the airport to Trinity College at 6 euros each, around 20 minutes. The hotel is a 10 minute walk from Grafton Street which is well lit and a nice area .

It is a lovely Townhouse which was welcoming and clean. We were offered a room on the ground floor or a slightly bigger room if we wanted to go up on the top floor. We opted for the top floor (around 4 sets of stairs). Lovely size room, bathroom (A shower so powerful, I felt like i’d been in a washing machine!) TV, Tea, Coffee, etc. Products. Opening window and views over the street. The bed was very comfortable! We didn’t have breakfast, but I believe it is 9 euros. We had a lovely weekend around Grafton St, Temple Bar, which is quite expensive for drinks, around 14 euros for a Guinness and a Red Wine. Amazing meal at Oliver St John Gogarty’s, which was a set price of 20 euros each for a two course dinner in their restaurant. (Which we did both nights as it was so good). Just a fabulous weekend and an amazing little gem of a hotel with friendly staff. We will definitely be going back.

History of Waterloo Lodge Bed and Breakfast Dublin located in Ballsbridge Dublin 4, Ireland

Waterloo Lodge Bed and Breakfast Dublin

Waterloo Lodge is located on Waterloo Road in Ballsbridge, Dublin 4

Waterloo Road was developed from the middle of the nineteenth century as part of the Pembroke Estate. The road formed part of the suburban expansion of Dublin in the nineteenth century, commencing with three-storey over high-basement houses with front gardens, later two-storey over high-basement houses were developed.

Waterloo Road is a significant survival of a nineteenth century road, which is largely intact from the date of its construction. It is a Victorian road following the template of the Georgian developers and with a simple and successful layout it sues a variation of single house type. The front facades, the principle architectural features of the houses, show the changes of taste during the period. Waterloo Lodge, number 23 is an example of Dublin’s Victorian architecture dating from circa 1850.

Waterloo Lodge Bed and Breakfast is a Victorian Townhouse a of simple rectangular plan form and was built as one of a pair. It was designed with a rhythm of tow regular bays that were positioned for visual effect in a brick faced wall with stucco cornice and the added highlight of an arched doorcase with an entablature supported on Tuscan columns with a fanlight over, in a recessed single-bay to the side of the house.
The building is a protected structure and together with the curtilage, its architectural significance derives from its Architectural, Group, Materials and Streetscape qualities and it is considered of Regional Importance.

The statue to the right is that of William III. It served as a focal point for annual Orange celebrations on July 1, the anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne, and on November 4, the king’s birthday.

College Green, obviously named today after Trinity College, but in medieval days it was known as Hoggen Green. Situated ½ km east of the city walls, Hoggen Green was once a common area used for grazing animals and for the performance of plays and pageants, the practice of archery and the popular spectacle of public hangings.
In the centre of College Green, with outstretched arm, is the 18th century patriot, Henry Grattan.

He was a member of the then Irish Parliament where he strenuously but vainly opposed the infamous Act of Union which united Ireland with Great Britain in 1800.

During the 18th century an aristocrat name Luke Gardiner had a vision for the centre of Dublin, his visionwas of a tree lined mall with residential structures and peaceful surroundings.  But in 1790 his dream was altered when Carlisle Bridge was built – now know as O’Connell Bridge.  This connecting bridge turned Sackville Street – now O’Connell Street into a very busy street and it eventually became the main thoroughfare of Dublin City Centre.

You can see from the vintage image of O’Connell Street how busy it became in c1900, with a busy tram, horses and carriages and carts going about their business.

We are framing this image and many more like it to display in the hallway in Baggot Cour Townhouse.  You can read more about vintage Dublin when you stay with us.

B&B Dublin – a great experience

We are delighted to share a review we received last week from guests who stay with us from the UK.

Rating: 5 /5
Review: We had a super stay at Baggot Court Townhouse in Dublin. We flew into Dublin early in the morning and were given complimentary hot drinks on arrival at the accommodation while the staff kindly got our room ready ahead of the usual check-in time, so we could have a rest and freshen up before heading into the city to explore. Our en suite room was lovely and clean, the staff were really friendly and helpful and the accommodation is in a great location. Last but not least, Baggot Court Townhouse do a delicious full Irish breakfast – what more could you wish for! : )

Review of Baggot Court Townhouse: My sister and I, both over 60, had a very enjoyable stay 6 night stay at the Baggot Court Townhouse in October. We shared a large quiet room on the first floor. The hot orders for breakfast were served promptly and the 2 woman managers were very helpful in giving directions and helping us with our luggage. We also appreciated a bus stop a few steps outside the front door. A good choice for a visit to Dublin S.Jones

Review about Baggot Court Townhouse Dublin

We are delighted that a customer wrote back to us after their stay in September-October 2013.  Mr & Mrs Code were visiting from Australia and they kindly took the time to write an amazing review.  It is a testimonial to all the staff and to Dublin and the enjoyment that they had while in Baggot Court Townhouse and Ireland.  See snipped below which is continued on our website.

Baggot Court Townhouse, 92 Lower Baggot Street, Dublin.
September 28 to October 6.

This was our fourth visit to Dublin. We chose to locate to Lower Baggot Street because it seemed preferable to our earlier stays on the other side of the Liffey. It was a careful decision, and a good one. The Townhouse is in an excellent location, very convenient for our purposes, wonderfully historic, with good amenities and an excellent staff.

We walked into Dublin on most days, either to the Stephen’s Green area and Grafton Street, or to Kildare Street, Trinity College, and Kilkenny Design Centre. When we needed the bus it was convenient, both coming and going, and on the few occasions we needed a taxi the fare was reasonable and the drivers helpful. We were able to choose very good restaurants such as “Thresher,” “The Nepalese and Indian,” and “The Cedar Tree.” The pubs were noisy and the pub food was exactly that, pub food. We were mainly renewing acquaintance with some fine galleries and museums, and adding those we had not seen before. The excellent “Gate Theatre” was easily reached by bus. We have friends and relatives in Dublin, so we were able to meet them, and explore more thoroughly, particularly around “Bewleys” and the Grafton Street area……….  Continued on this page
